<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141412; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">I found this small fragment of china at the weekend on the River Thames foreshore with a French backstamp. Although I have not been able to trace the design I was able to track down some interesting details from the backstamp.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141412; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Emile Bourgeois (1832-1926) was the owner of the Grand Depot at
21 rue Drouot in Paris which was a department store selling ceramics. Shops at other locations included the one at 33 rue St-Ferreol in
Marseille which can be seen on the backstamp of my fragment of china beneath
the Paris address. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141412; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141412; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Emile spent time in England between
1856-1860 studying commerce and after trade agreements were signed he became the main
representative of British ceramic manufactures in France. He was also
responsible for initiating the Grand Depot magazine/catalogue displaying the china he was selling to encourage
customers to place orders or choose their items before visiting the shop. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #141412; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">If
you look at the shopfront (on the left and above the entrance) you will see advertisements
for English Iron Stone, English Majolica and the words ‘Stoke on Trent’.</span></div>

Here are some clay pipe bowls I found by eye on the Thames foreshore recently (I can't dig or scrape the foreshore without a permit). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've discovered by reading the history of pipes that as tobacco became cheaper the pipe bowls became larger which is a helpful way to date them. The oldest pipe bowl in the photo is the smallest one probably mid to late 17th century judging by the pipe dating chart I found online. I'm no expert though so please correct me if I'm wrong. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3kW2uavfm03Hsz9SIGO2dzRLdh0L3a43isuu6Uufs5gf8fUTQtEvyMO5lMJDjxW48oKCq9almR_glCDZrCYV2KCBd6FvDhWmRBBjO-z-O4KdAo_5rAElm_xorAtQzQdK0A75ab5xMbLja/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3kW2uavfm03Hsz9SIGO2dzRLdh0L3a43isuu6Uufs5gf8fUTQtEvyMO5lMJDjxW48oKCq9almR_glCDZrCYV2KCBd6FvDhWmRBBjO-z-O4KdAo_5rAElm_xorAtQzQdK0A75ab5xMbLja/s640/007.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The little buff coloured cube in the photo below is a ceramic 'knuckle' or spog. They were used in a child's game when one would be thrown up and the child would pick up as many as they could while it was in the air....19th/20th century (Thanks London Mudlark for confirming that). Sounds very much like the game of 'Jacks' that I played as a kid at school.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxy4PxkcnyPnSAyT1gMDE8yu7-77swvCyoSnJp2-pGlLVC8US9U-opx_SgWdz_qcdesanekvA8P_0J3Rw_bGe-xeNSocQ17VlL8JD7zaFtsAl6nSDQBxT92ZZ1r9szuqYerdbvlJz2xuD/s1600/006.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDxy4PxkcnyPnSAyT1gMDE8yu7-77swvCyoSnJp2-pGlLVC8US9U-opx_SgWdz_qcdesanekvA8P_0J3Rw_bGe-xeNSocQ17VlL8JD7zaFtsAl6nSDQBxT92ZZ1r9szuqYerdbvlJz2xuD/s640/006.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also discovered yesterday that pieces of pottery are called 'sherds' (whereas pieces of glass are called 'shards)'. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I never knew that! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I quite enjoy looking up the designs & attempting to date them. Even though they might only be a very small fragment of history it's still fascinating. If you look very carefully you may see a tiny butterfly on one of the 'sherds' at the bottom.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Drypoint printing. Described to me as the closest you will get to an etching without using a copper plate. It creates a lovely, soft, almost pencil like print. The only disadvantage is that you need a printing press so need to have access to one to create the final image.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSEnU0QNsA9JHiMr3IVYEueXH6y9RQqH4y3Dt9X5kim_rGlz1WHRkP9zHXAotZq7QJKmkYIg6XpaHq79Co4k3HpLaMI_f6yMAzzbUvP8A0hmOzht8rHVbMhuN7OlDsm5lXSMYeSxlSIy5d/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSEnU0QNsA9JHiMr3IVYEueXH6y9RQqH4y3Dt9X5kim_rGlz1WHRkP9zHXAotZq7QJKmkYIg6XpaHq79Co4k3HpLaMI_f6yMAzzbUvP8A0hmOzht8rHVbMhuN7OlDsm5lXSMYeSxlSIy5d/s640/008.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I don't usually take selfies but the theme of the 10 week print course has been self portraits so I have had to take lots of photos of myself which has felt very alien.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I chose this image for my first drypoint print. The finished print will face the same way as the original image.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXrekJArLJ3pWRCIxr4-87P0KxQTYPW73KdWV6IDOtmWVzyJLU-xzse1DRM4-yx-AIxo423QOUmKRuTPlhw5wJTC_EXmBApeCZgf2m4B89ECdZnLqYgpH0RpELpqG9oJmB4J6Lz9vE34Dd/s1600/009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXrekJArLJ3pWRCIxr4-87P0KxQTYPW73KdWV6IDOtmWVzyJLU-xzse1DRM4-yx-AIxo423QOUmKRuTPlhw5wJTC_EXmBApeCZgf2m4B89ECdZnLqYgpH0RpELpqG9oJmB4J6Lz9vE34Dd/s400/009.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Use a drypoint needle to scratch the image into the perspex sheet which ideally should be 0.75mm -1mm thick. It does begin to hurt your hand after a while so I may invest in a electric or battery operated one in the future.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwR7LyCf6f4Yjq5vvrYDyIcOyKZwE1Q4uqty0SroSuAMRtFvUiAjO_38k5Rh35H_1rd7_Ozh7FAMOsBRXYZbRB1PtNJBqc-kPR1EDef-JCa430FBGwXnUq5Pb6gHd3jg4iZVKePWH2sCmP/s1600/001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwR7LyCf6f4Yjq5vvrYDyIcOyKZwE1Q4uqty0SroSuAMRtFvUiAjO_38k5Rh35H_1rd7_Ozh7FAMOsBRXYZbRB1PtNJBqc-kPR1EDef-JCa430FBGwXnUq5Pb6gHd3jg4iZVKePWH2sCmP/s400/001.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First place your chosen image under the perspex sheet and trace the main outline & details using a permanent marker pen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5hwHf1qr8U5GeIW_E_GGVo1iBKtxNEVwz_e-N7-APfi8WodslsNjK7EASnrg5xW4etpyzgdwmRRZ4Xtu-JVJaRy6qUr6qXGXZNdJDQ0vGQtKbdGcn2Q_D3ksCyZVJdpmwiyQYgVFs4o4/s1600/IMG_8558.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5hwHf1qr8U5GeIW_E_GGVo1iBKtxNEVwz_e-N7-APfi8WodslsNjK7EASnrg5xW4etpyzgdwmRRZ4Xtu-JVJaRy6qUr6qXGXZNdJDQ0vGQtKbdGcn2Q_D3ksCyZVJdpmwiyQYgVFs4o4/s640/IMG_8558.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Reverse the perspex & use the drypoint needle to scratch the image out using the pen lines as a guide. Draw the needle towards use firmly & rotate the perspex to get continuous even lines. Lots of other tools can be used to create different marks on the surface. As you can see from the image below I have added more detail to the hair. The deeper the cut lines, the more defined the finished print will be.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUcvWzva1BDfkG6sPkML1kj1AkH0rseRyCx2e7r8zimUQi2YZjKRJfa5UA2fwFF3lUCNy1tkaeJSAat-UQG6tz4RoY7NkILq9FSqypeopxHN1yqM6CSuv-GyuDx4xUuIJVLkPRk3nJwXMF/s1600/IMG_8562.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUcvWzva1BDfkG6sPkML1kj1AkH0rseRyCx2e7r8zimUQi2YZjKRJfa5UA2fwFF3lUCNy1tkaeJSAat-UQG6tz4RoY7NkILq9FSqypeopxHN1yqM6CSuv-GyuDx4xUuIJVLkPRk3nJwXMF/s640/IMG_8562.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ideally place the image on a light box or hold it up to the light to see where you have worked or gently rub the surface to feel where the cut lines are. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS8rS90oio9VGok_wC42zf9cfjh19Wc5dzJkPPME4IjZjJiVMYNQw_fJSo8xzWMY4VaTuBBZpe7qTiQRa6e2K4vbHf1NaS9g2KdKvvGYMfnrbmDQyzyceGhEN6HynUbheeViNNp2T3tvrf/s1600/IMG_8563.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS8rS90oio9VGok_wC42zf9cfjh19Wc5dzJkPPME4IjZjJiVMYNQw_fJSo8xzWMY4VaTuBBZpe7qTiQRa6e2K4vbHf1NaS9g2KdKvvGYMfnrbmDQyzyceGhEN6HynUbheeViNNp2T3tvrf/s640/IMG_8563.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The perspex is then inked up using an oil based printing ink applied with an applicator (or a piece of thick card) to the scratched surface. The ink will gather in the cut lines & scrim material is then rubbed in a circular motion to remove the excess ink. The image below shows the ink removed on the upper section of the perspex partway through the process. It's very messy so wear an apron & use disposable gloves. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRC02uhn4uzx5FiQ1NbuG0qBUYv_dwmxIaoUJqapNl-MgS6H4Jxb_YdC93kHhvkABDcp2od3tA7vCrxMA9Ip0XWklocGDp2CSDq9WSKaW4CO3yTE72Z_4Y5YhoIehUqzsJZ1zwLPIfa1_L/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRC02uhn4uzx5FiQ1NbuG0qBUYv_dwmxIaoUJqapNl-MgS6H4Jxb_YdC93kHhvkABDcp2od3tA7vCrxMA9Ip0XWklocGDp2CSDq9WSKaW4CO3yTE72Z_4Y5YhoIehUqzsJZ1zwLPIfa1_L/s640/007.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My first drypoint print. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The perspex leaves a lovely indentation similar to a copper plate etching.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The paper needs to be presoaked for at least 5-10 mins before printing & part dried (no visible water on the surface) by placing it between blotting paper & pressing with a clean ink roller. Remove your gloves & make sure your hands are ink free before handling the paper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEickUg3pNvtBOo5IVXp349bWv2aOh8l6WiBmD6H3XmqzRWGR64gAgfkHW-CI02KUcX3t7NNrx1QFzZE3naBxMEEtAONdc05msl4JDKl1ZGNk8KDN_iON6p8aBhjsLgKo5SY52Tjr72e7jXz/s1600/008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEickUg3pNvtBOo5IVXp349bWv2aOh8l6WiBmD6H3XmqzRWGR64gAgfkHW-CI02KUcX3t7NNrx1QFzZE3naBxMEEtAONdc05msl4JDKl1ZGNk8KDN_iON6p8aBhjsLgKo5SY52Tjr72e7jXz/s640/008.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After the first image was printed, a small amount of white spirit was poured onto the perspex plate to make the ink run to make an experimental print. </div>

Lots of new properties being built on both banks of the river. Probably way beyond the affordability of most Londoners though.</div>

My daughter's interview went very well so we popped into the O2 afterwards for coffee & a celebratory lunch. Lots of hard work but first interview done & dusted. So very proud of her.</div>

I did manage to sneak onto the foreshore to satisfy my passion for collecting. It also helped to take my mind off the interview for a little while (that's my excuse anyway). I hope there are other people out there who get just as excited (and I mean EXCITED) as me about river/beach combing? I just love holding pieces of glass & <strike>shards</strike> sherds of pottery in my hands that have been tumbled smooth by the water and imagining the history behind each piece. These pieces shall be added to my existing pieces along with my driftwood and all of my other fascinating finds......</div>

I am getting very inspired by my print course. I've been drawing more & getting hooked on monoprints as they are so relaxing & satisfying to do.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7BJBRP3i-oCRbZyTsQkVb_MDMS-wk47fPt8VmZay32JDHofJy32lhEyR4aXVctCVc_s-sl4H_Ux3iBKtHPhiXbfuo_YQs5nUgBKdFQ6826fcrOOCGIbocr4EeG6j15K-KA39_FUgR_CNK/s1600/IMG_8628.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7BJBRP3i-oCRbZyTsQkVb_MDMS-wk47fPt8VmZay32JDHofJy32lhEyR4aXVctCVc_s-sl4H_Ux3iBKtHPhiXbfuo_YQs5nUgBKdFQ6826fcrOOCGIbocr4EeG6j15K-KA39_FUgR_CNK/s400/IMG_8628.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is one of my latest cacti sketches/pen drawings which I have turned into two separate monoprints.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifuVpdUz6g6GM1T2HTAim-ly6vkVDQIVd4yA5L93GFlN7UgbBenrywAIZUON2JJ5gHRwyqtXrR2b6ovPWwcu7374KDp_0w29mfrBwYzmK8rjx-noGjIDGCeVAyAspTOreLrzQwblmEd79s/s1600/016.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifuVpdUz6g6GM1T2HTAim-ly6vkVDQIVd4yA5L93GFlN7UgbBenrywAIZUON2JJ5gHRwyqtXrR2b6ovPWwcu7374KDp_0w29mfrBwYzmK8rjx-noGjIDGCeVAyAspTOreLrzQwblmEd79s/s400/016.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first print always takes up more ink which can leave some very interesting textured marks on the paper. I heard this described as background noise this week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc9v_Lx6818lMz8S8_c2TE538OuOYih8KCE2NLazT6V2A27zB6IO9fyL1i6DqKGeOWTs-WIH3uSTPAofHig3SfV6_ms3fc6XaMaRtD-UjoBqc36LbxWV2sRN1F37LHuhvKKoQPra64t8g1/s1600/018.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc9v_Lx6818lMz8S8_c2TE538OuOYih8KCE2NLazT6V2A27zB6IO9fyL1i6DqKGeOWTs-WIH3uSTPAofHig3SfV6_ms3fc6XaMaRtD-UjoBqc36LbxWV2sRN1F37LHuhvKKoQPra64t8g1/s400/018.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The second print is usually cleaner (below).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqWOR1YhRHwC1khyKcWAxLreNDdFoNrK-tgcXDzwV2Dp10pzPOaV_ONrnAmAF6wHyKB0Q-aEIsWRby1pKCfwk33M3wjFQi6GXnwp6htf37YV_eojPf__hg26uaBtnkkJnltgBH7b0ffI-Y/s1600/037.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqWOR1YhRHwC1khyKcWAxLreNDdFoNrK-tgcXDzwV2Dp10pzPOaV_ONrnAmAF6wHyKB0Q-aEIsWRby1pKCfwk33M3wjFQi6GXnwp6htf37YV_eojPf__hg26uaBtnkkJnltgBH7b0ffI-Y/s400/037.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I always photograph the inked glass before I wash it clean. The overlapping images create an almost 3D effect & I love the way the ink roller leaves interesting lines on the surface.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My daughter visited Brighton Uni back in the Autumn where she is hoping to study Graphic Design. Afterwards we strolled around the Pavillion Gardens which are directly opposite the campus & then took the short walk down to the pier followed by fish & chips (and veggie option for my daughter) to eat on the beach before travelling home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvnQV2HXtWnV0hJEF4sZijGVE4haz21UhQwUyTLhbqrm56fN4jcy0M4_E-dLwhZWurna-ykYUJqPQBJoAU8LyM8RjmFD_gG72FzGjSpm_rpOV30m9O9e0ucOf4S7OAnWx8X3IYRKoSO577/s1600/Brighton+28+Oct+2015+065.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvnQV2HXtWnV0hJEF4sZijGVE4haz21UhQwUyTLhbqrm56fN4jcy0M4_E-dLwhZWurna-ykYUJqPQBJoAU8LyM8RjmFD_gG72FzGjSpm_rpOV30m9O9e0ucOf4S7OAnWx8X3IYRKoSO577/s400/Brighton+28+Oct+2015+065.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I used this photo as inspiration for a monoprint. However it wasn't until I started doing the lettering that I remembered it was going to print in reverse!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQP8dwwN2rHiNMjJt5MckSOdufBB2Vm4ukEjwAoDcjCTQ_lj8bkOIQLO_6kzHg4JntjlC_8HGJAFoH5lh8La-C4XSVLhAN9Q4LqTzMuFpSYEqG0sCb0jiGoOcyWaDdHECq4OK8h_BQRC2/s1600/038.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEQP8dwwN2rHiNMjJt5MckSOdufBB2Vm4ukEjwAoDcjCTQ_lj8bkOIQLO_6kzHg4JntjlC_8HGJAFoH5lh8La-C4XSVLhAN9Q4LqTzMuFpSYEqG0sCb0jiGoOcyWaDdHECq4OK8h_BQRC2/s400/038.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
An impression had been left in the inked surface though so I photographed that before I had to wash it off. I actually really like the lines left by the roller on the glass & hints of my previous prints coming through. I shall reverse the image & have another go soon.<br />

My daughter has submitted her personal statement & has now been asked to submit her portfolio online. Fingers (and everything else crossed) that she gets offered a place.<br />

Monoprints are a very quick & simple method of printing which is relatively cheap once you have invested in the basic equipment.<br />
<br />
2 x glass or perspex sheets<br />
Ink roller<br />
Printing ink (oil based or water based)<br />
Paper<br />
Newspaper (to cover work surfaces)<br />
Image (or draw freehand)<br />
Pencils & other mark makers<br />
Rags & white spirit (for oil based ink)<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidAfn5mfahk3pt-KK67ccy5s8M9R1WZ_nYPLHrO-krrYEbQCbQNd4Nku9XRwALXjebsgxmw8DmL-5znh2Uj9j0cXQFFcwkuhQLr02wID4w4NaGiTr1IU-coPa5SGBf9RYLi3FvHa-R5wSk/s1600/IMG_8350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidAfn5mfahk3pt-KK67ccy5s8M9R1WZ_nYPLHrO-krrYEbQCbQNd4Nku9XRwALXjebsgxmw8DmL-5znh2Uj9j0cXQFFcwkuhQLr02wID4w4NaGiTr1IU-coPa5SGBf9RYLi3FvHa-R5wSk/s400/IMG_8350.JPG" width="400" /></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHhO6dliVV7oDZr16Ptj_hbQMgfeejymYGvlJ4p-K639BKeKRlzzy2uZXMWQTqX8K2-5OHK8xjjIfa_jxuIUBKTOgw3WJEYvFMpYWSDlORWpVPEYtK8YQ8yMhAqP344nW9hqCAmYXkRwqs/s1600/IMG_8337.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHhO6dliVV7oDZr16Ptj_hbQMgfeejymYGvlJ4p-K639BKeKRlzzy2uZXMWQTqX8K2-5OHK8xjjIfa_jxuIUBKTOgw3WJEYvFMpYWSDlORWpVPEYtK8YQ8yMhAqP344nW9hqCAmYXkRwqs/s400/IMG_8337.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
I decided to experiment at the weekend with producing some further monoprints following my first print class. This is my original pen drawing of feathers.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_13IVlp2LQr-ah3nGpmrlFXOmu_dHBBr3pZK74QgBCcvESpxVkDCbG8huUZByio-WC_H4Wpmo4XtbDKEKqkTEZCTT5exVz-NL5voNGO4uyf5NTd7pbjSCoohXb2O2Si9ZKPya8ouRTUQl/s1600/IMG_8309.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_13IVlp2LQr-ah3nGpmrlFXOmu_dHBBr3pZK74QgBCcvESpxVkDCbG8huUZByio-WC_H4Wpmo4XtbDKEKqkTEZCTT5exVz-NL5voNGO4uyf5NTd7pbjSCoohXb2O2Si9ZKPya8ouRTUQl/s400/IMG_8309.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Begin by photocopying the image you wish to print or you could use an image from a magazine. You could also draw freehand to produce a spontaneous design. Your eventual print will be reversed so bear this in mind if the image includes lettering.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV_flkHXJPKNdQi70yheiOUx_B9r-QUUCLKGkiYe_3xzFwJTAMr2v7qH6WRpRRcf6odnuO-1uO-f1Ae13QrWtIwc3mGpYb2xQYxRGh1V66rVwGPmC8p87OqaXUADhca3lapdpgl5627zZ3/s1600/IMG_8327.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV_flkHXJPKNdQi70yheiOUx_B9r-QUUCLKGkiYe_3xzFwJTAMr2v7qH6WRpRRcf6odnuO-1uO-f1Ae13QrWtIwc3mGpYb2xQYxRGh1V66rVwGPmC8p87OqaXUADhca3lapdpgl5627zZ3/s400/IMG_8327.JPG" width="266" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Squeeze a small amount of printing ink onto a piece of glass or perspex & roll it out to a smooth consistency. This will act as your palette. Transfer ink to your working piece of perspex or glass making sure the ink covers an area large enough to incorporate your image. I used water based printing ink at the weekend but oil based printing ink at my class which I was informed produces a better finish and stays 'workable' for longer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GA3jbWiktuvsRBzW_eQImIQRWEIWbQ2Z_zkvNGSdBXMulmPYz7Ea_vZYABKyhbvWVG4nFcg9VsfGeskwauyFzfaLNLREMnEISp_5R6vit0_dOZnJ_E91zNKWpwA_PI0Cgl9eaIGKHuKq/s1600/IMG_8311.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1GA3jbWiktuvsRBzW_eQImIQRWEIWbQ2Z_zkvNGSdBXMulmPYz7Ea_vZYABKyhbvWVG4nFcg9VsfGeskwauyFzfaLNLREMnEISp_5R6vit0_dOZnJ_E91zNKWpwA_PI0Cgl9eaIGKHuKq/s400/IMG_8311.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fix your chosen image with masking tape to a sheet of drawing paper. Lay these on top of the inked working surface & fix with masking tape to the top of the glass/perspex so you can lift the paper to reveal the effect you are achieving without the print moving from its original position.<br />
Use a pencil (or similar) to draw your image (very much like a tracing) without leaning on the paper. You will find that your mark making differs depending on how soft or hard you press onto the paper. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkXW8EMVj-jcIwdhSgZFisCbXigl62gS5-lQPDfBAYC-j-sD8Acb7z36rmQj3BQRZNqr1ejx-l3gWTw8M8jT1vi4NDO-SB2c0UQBvh9Uhe8Ze41W_iUzR644kE2UZiLG-DSudf4P1_ZcgH/s1600/IMG_8308+-+Copy.JPG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkXW8EMVj-jcIwdhSgZFisCbXigl62gS5-lQPDfBAYC-j-sD8Acb7z36rmQj3BQRZNqr1ejx-l3gWTw8M8jT1vi4NDO-SB2c0UQBvh9Uhe8Ze41W_iUzR644kE2UZiLG-DSudf4P1_ZcgH/s400/IMG_8308+-+Copy.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once you are happy with your print remove it from the inked surface & allow to dry.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaF4rlwMIOvxVBwNPdDwforphmNUOEIFxFT_-zdFFCFLSnroNTh9KyhSLXuxRT41RvlQHcrfY2SUQe4qqVDVNfNqpjv7e_RwWKUVLqNuBlRvbjpvis4nGA9hknRkiKDW6R53fTiUuKQuDq/s1600/IMG_8307.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaF4rlwMIOvxVBwNPdDwforphmNUOEIFxFT_-zdFFCFLSnroNTh9KyhSLXuxRT41RvlQHcrfY2SUQe4qqVDVNfNqpjv7e_RwWKUVLqNuBlRvbjpvis4nGA9hknRkiKDW6R53fTiUuKQuDq/s640/IMG_8307.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see the first print I made picked up a lot of ink so next time I shall use a test sheet to remove the excess ink. My second print showed much finer detailing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJmWr0o3r9E7ffS0nhLRFcG8WPS98ABdkc29RvWPUUOGxa6Jv5eOTUk3yuRtU1M9_unkq9hPmj0XS8qbVBP0yN1-yNZfZyrtGCLm7vOwMILQnW3t14I1wq6XGfnVQPIY0sxMxKs3i6VZ0r/s1600/IMG_8312.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJmWr0o3r9E7ffS0nhLRFcG8WPS98ABdkc29RvWPUUOGxa6Jv5eOTUk3yuRtU1M9_unkq9hPmj0XS8qbVBP0yN1-yNZfZyrtGCLm7vOwMILQnW3t14I1wq6XGfnVQPIY0sxMxKs3i6VZ0r/s400/IMG_8312.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I drew a double border around my third print to frame the feathers. I think this is my favourite print of the three.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZdxvdrIfHFOsRV_HpSD7lcLqG2QvMbukVFWqMdD-qH4iZbNuzYr4uhueCoqHK6yW60P41K4SVCGgpzXEBgbSqowWmHOyeVwZTmSNr-ixc1oRXWNrBKMyfdZSa-AYQ3ItizGiq094CZyFS/s1600/IMG_8328.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZdxvdrIfHFOsRV_HpSD7lcLqG2QvMbukVFWqMdD-qH4iZbNuzYr4uhueCoqHK6yW60P41K4SVCGgpzXEBgbSqowWmHOyeVwZTmSNr-ixc1oRXWNrBKMyfdZSa-AYQ3ItizGiq094CZyFS/s400/IMG_8328.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each print is a unique one off. Be prepared for a slightly messy finish but this is part of the charm & gives each print its unique quality.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX3N5utrkeMknQqpkX478NHr48EnPFJM3ac_9ecVDU9v2Qo4-Ot8PK-BEdsDRrfLQEV-kOhIjgkQwy9gKIdZ1Bx7qyB91340nrW2vhl44LrZtEFFtQQRq283Ors7Laz8y7W7WwG6SXv3Pp/s1600/IMG_8315.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgX3N5utrkeMknQqpkX478NHr48EnPFJM3ac_9ecVDU9v2Qo4-Ot8PK-BEdsDRrfLQEV-kOhIjgkQwy9gKIdZ1Bx7qyB91340nrW2vhl44LrZtEFFtQQRq283Ors7Laz8y7W7WwG6SXv3Pp/s400/IMG_8315.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my inked work surface following 3 prints. I love the overlapping images.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A piece of art in itself which I couldn't bear to wash off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Water based inks can be washed off with warm water whereas oil based inks require an old rag & white spirit & it's a good idea to wear disposable gloves, old clothes or an apron as it can get very messy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The palette had started to dry whilst I had lunch so I added some water to it which produced a different background effect again. With oil based printing ink you can add a small amount of white spirit to create different effects or use a rag to remove areas of ink. I haven't tried this yet but plan to in the weeks to come.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXSJw_8Aq0fM79nNn_UOs86iO5KrY9sNV0ZsTPxuhTCyTxYpRMAML4w8h2W-Ub9WSnezZMzW8JRNAxUngQSr_VB9Ht0zCzJiovtAVELZfxh2f_EhmA6UODOyfGyGxGNrwmhStLNcFGkRSB/s1600/IMG_8330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXSJw_8Aq0fM79nNn_UOs86iO5KrY9sNV0ZsTPxuhTCyTxYpRMAML4w8h2W-Ub9WSnezZMzW8JRNAxUngQSr_VB9Ht0zCzJiovtAVELZfxh2f_EhmA6UODOyfGyGxGNrwmhStLNcFGkRSB/s640/IMG_8330.JPG" width="425" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second print had a more faded effect.</div>

I managed to capture this beautiful little moss on my iPhone last weekend whilst on a very wet and muddy walk. Funny how little things can brighten your day when you least expect it. </div>

Hi everyone. I've been away for a long time but hope to get back to blogging again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just started a print course. This is my first attempt at monoprints. So nice to be focusing on my creative side again.</div>

<span style="color: #3d85c6;">Remember I showed you these a few weeks ago? My old pine bedside cabinet and toybox. Well between eldest daughter visiting from uni and a few nice days out I managed to get them finished.</span></div>

I've been busy on the allotment the past few weeks digging, weeding, laying new barkchip on the paths, under the plum tree and around my fruit bushes and generally tidying up. I'm also digging out my large compost bin which has been left brewing for a few years. It has produced some lovely compost which I've used to top up my raised beds and mulch my fruit with.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started some Lupin seeds off last year at home and the warmth has started them back into growth. I haven't grown these for a few years so looking forward to their beautiful colours. Might be able to squeeze a few in the garden but if not I'll grow them on the allotment for cutting.</div>

My tomato seedlings 'Roma VF' and 'Marmande' are doing well (indoors) and now need potting on. This is when I start to run out of windowsill space! Unfortunately my cherry tomatoes haven't germinated so I'll have to buy some new seed. </div>

A decorative Dahlia 'Arabian Night' with fully-double flowerheads of dark burgundy-red and 'Pompon, Natel' which has a very dark red (almost black) flower.<br />
Could look good in a vase with orange and pink flowers maybe?<br />

I also bought some new summer fruiting Raspberry canes yesterday for the allotment - 'Glen Ample' which have been given the RHS prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM) so I'm expecting a great crop (well maybe not this year). I've been meaning to invest in some new canes the last few years but never seem to get around to it. Just need to build a support structure now!<br />
Cooling down here in the south after our heatwave the past week.<br />
Hope you all have an enjoyable week.</div>

<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The inspiration for my bedroom makeover began when I saw this beautiful sky blue wallpaper from Mini Moderns (in collaboration with artist Rob Ryan) on a program a while back called Kirstie's Vintage Home. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavOFZb07rJdOvIvXhRvAY9iwq0jppdlWtAvMD-HvHaWbU_ef9Eow0fjVrfjLTYFboKKaXzZvjNJjEmPY4tO4z4QGACj96rO459YI8aWIb4IwpaYs8co1RpZODL7ekozSjtBcNq6SXdeSz/s1600/013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgavOFZb07rJdOvIvXhRvAY9iwq0jppdlWtAvMD-HvHaWbU_ef9Eow0fjVrfjLTYFboKKaXzZvjNJjEmPY4tO4z4QGACj96rO459YI8aWIb4IwpaYs8co1RpZODL7ekozSjtBcNq6SXdeSz/s1600/013.JPG" height="640" width="424" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">The wallpaper shows Rob Ryan's distinctive paper cut designs and is called 'Our Adventure is About to Begin'. The little birds are holding these words in their beaks along with flowers and leaves as they fly away from their open cages.</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">I had a plasterer skim the ceiling and over a number of months I painted all the woodwork and hung the wallpaper.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">My backroom housed my bedroom and I slept in my eldest daughter's bedroom while she was away at uni.
